Celebrating All the KÜHL Mamas

To celebrate Mother’s Day, we collected quotes about what it means to be a mom and asked our ambassadors and contributors to share pictures and thoughts about what makes the KÜHL mama in their life so special.

Take a few moments this weekend to thank that special mother, grandmother, aunt, sister, and friend for all she does. Happy Mother’s Day!

My mother, Ruth, is a walking miracle. From a young age, my mother always encouraged me to travel and be adventurous through her own journeys abroad. A few years ago she caught falciparum malaria (the most dangerous form of malaria) whilst visiting our once home in Malawi. With a high mortality rate, even with treatment, those close were not sure if she would make it, but remarkably she survived. Through sheer determination, she went from months without even the energy to stand, to recently walking the ‘Race for Life’ which is 3 miles long. She has taught me the real meaning of tolerance and bravery and is a true example that the ability to achieve something starts in your mind. It’s because of her that I appreciate the outdoors and try never to miss an opportunity for adventure.

My mom deserves 100% credit for my love of the outdoors. She was always taking us hiking, kayaking, snorkeling, and more and insisted that we do as much outside as possible. Although I wasn’t very enthusiastic about it as a rather sickly, inactive child, I’ve really come to embrace everything she taught me as an adult. Whether hiking in the mountains of Grand Teton National Park or paddle boarding in Florida, I owe my love of #mountainculture to my mom!

To describe my mother would be to write about a hurricane in its perfect power. Or the climbing, falling colors of a rainbow.

Mama exhorted her children at every opportunity to ‘jump at de sun.’ We might not land on the sun, but at least we would get off the ground.

Dani Carbo is living the high life

I am extremely fortunate to have a wife that keeps our family grounded, even when her feet aren’t on the ground.  Whether she is skydiving at our local drop zone, sea kayaking in the San Juan Islands or running a race in a new city every month, Dani helps keep our family fun, energetic and together.  She is definitely one Kühl mama!

My mother had a slender, small body, but a large heart—a heart so large that everybody’s joys found welcome in it, and hospitable accommodation.

My wife Michelle: full of adventure, love, and service.  Michelle leads the humanitarian effort at her job. She’s involved me with her humanitarian work in Mexico, and I’m always taken aback by the love she has for the people there. That love also shines with her interactions with animals. I model my approach in life after Michelle. She makes me a better person; she truly is my better half. A tenderhearted woman, selfless in possessions, her focus in life is truly giving and less receiving. I love her.

A huge shout out to my wife, best friend, riding partner and child rearing extraordinaire, Sara Kylander-Johnson! Thanks for making life an adventure, where the unexpected is always a spectacular opportunity. Kiera and I are unbelievably fortunate to have such a powerful presence leading us through this Gordian Knot of life.

As a wife and mother, Lisa defines dedicated, energetic, and selfless—despite a career as an LPGA teaching professional, Lisa is always there for me and our two sons, Cameron and Jonathan. Furthermore, Lisa is solid all-around athlete and rock climber and, amazingly, she doesn’t mind roughing it in the mountains for days on end. Many weekends each year—and for one month each summer—we venture as a family to climbing areas near and far. Even at the age of 50, Lisa remains eager to recreate in the mountains with “her boys”. Yes, I’m a lucky guy to have such a unique and wonderful wife. Love ya’ hon!
