Dallas is a modern Northern Texan metropolis, not to mention the cultural and commercial hub of the region. It is the fourth most metropolitan area in the U.S. and the most populous city in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex. As a bustling city, Dallas is not often thought of as a hiking hot spot. But in fact, there are several wonderful warm weather hiking trails in and around the Dallas/Fort Worth area for both residents and visitors to explore the great outdoors.

Oak Cliff Nature Preserve

The Oak Cliff Nature Preserve consists of over 100 acres of wildflower meadows and woodlands, with eight miles of hike-able trails. This slice of nature in the middle of the big city is perfect for a natural escape.

Fort Worth Nature Center & Refuge

Located just inside Fort Worth, 30 minutes away from Dallas, the Fort Worth Nature Center and Refuge features over 20 miles of hiking trails inside over 3,000 acres of diverse North Texan flora and fauna. The park is open year round except for Christmas and Thanksgiving.

Trinity River Audubon Center

This nature preserve and center is located in the Great Trinity Forest, an urban open space park in the southeastern part of Dallas. This is a hidden gem with an Audubon Center and multiple different trails and well-maintained paths for bird watchers and nature lovers.

Valley View Park

This recreation area with over 27 acres of trails, playgrounds, and more is ideal for families as well as hikers. One specifically beautiful trail takes hikers about 10 miles up to White Rock Lake. Valley View Park features plenty of spots for hikers to stop and take in the scenery, day or night.

Big Cedar Wilderness DORBA Trail

This lovely hiking spot close to Dallas features clearly marked, well-maintained trails featuring extensive tree cover and even benches to rest on. The trail head includes picnic areas and the trail also includes a butterfly garden. Open from dawn to dusk Monday through Saturday and 1pm to dusk on Sundays, this church-owned property is a wonderful area to explore and hike.

Whether you decide to pick one, several, or all of these trails to hike, it's important for your health and safety to remember to bring adequate equipment, including:

Versatile men's hiking pants such as stylish and durable KÜHL Radikl pants with superior fit and function with a strategically placed cell phone pocket so you don't lose or sit on your electronic devices, or our Softshell abrasion-resistant pants perfect for both winter wear and summer hiking. KÜHL's breathable and comfortable women's cotton pants with the strength of quick-dry nylon is also perfect for outdoor use.

Hiking shorts: For hikers who prefer wearing active shorts, KÜHL offers abrasion-resistant shorts, cargo shorts, and other quick-drying fabrics that allows for freedom of movement, in multiple natural colors and functional styles.

Shirts: KÜHL offers a variety of short and long-sleeve shirts. KÜHL's durable, versatile hiking and travel shirts are quick drying, wrinkle resistant, and packable; while the Klassik long sleeve shirts feature articulated five-panel sleeves for better range of motion, comfort, and easy layering in case of weather changes.

Hats are important for protecting your face and eyes from the glare of the unforgiving sun when you are hiking outdoor trails. KÜHL offers stylish caps, visors, and boonie hats featuring innovative cooling technology and UPF protection to keep you cool and safeguard you from damaging sunlight.

Consider UPF: Ultraviolet Protection Factor (UPF) is a standard used to measure sunburn protection, created especially for sun protective fabrics. UPF measures both UVB and UVA protection. UVB is responsible for skin damage caused by the sun, while UVA is important in other areas of sun damage, from wrinkles to skin cancer. UV protection numbers range from 15-24 ("good protection") to 25-39 ("very good protection") to 40-50+ ("excellent protection protection"). Many of KÜHL's clothing products have a UPF factor of around 50 for sun protection.

No matter which of these trails you decide to hike, remember to choose the right outfit, select the right gear, and bring along a trusted friend to create the perfect hiking experience, while protecting yourself from unnecessary risks and dangers.
