New York City: land of bustling crowds and activity. Not a place you may automatically associate with great hiking! But step away a little bit and you'll discover a wealth of gorgeous parks, preserves, and hiking trails near New York.

Hudson Valley Hikes

Head north to find a gorgeous selection of day hikes, with some jaw-dropping scenery to photograph along the way.

Teatown Lake Reservation

Presenting nearly 15 miles of trail options, Teatown is the perfect choice for a novice hiker or someone in search of a moderate challenge. Teatown maintains 14 different trails, with the shortest at .6 miles, and the longest clocking in at 6.5 miles. Trails will bring you through a variety of terrain, from meadow to forest. Take the Twin Lakes Loop (2.3 miles) and enjoy time on a floating bridge/boardwalk.

Harriman State Park

Located west of the Hudson River, Harriman State Park is startlingly large, with 200 total miles of hiking trails over its vast expanse. With so many trails in this network, it can be easy to lose your way, and find yourself meandering in unknown locations! We would recommend the purchase of a comprehensive trail map, to keep you safely on course. The park is simply gorgeous, with amazing lake and interesting rock formation views.

Popolopen Torne

Okay, you're chomping at the bit now - you want to scramble up some rocks. And you're desperate for some fantastic Hudson River views. Visit the Fort Montgomery State Historic Site and enjoy a 4.7-mile loop to an absolutely stunning vista. Park in the lot just north of the historic site. Note: parts of Popolopen Torne were closed in July 2018 to remove some trees felled in springtime storms. Check and make sure trail routes are available before making this journey.

Anthony's Nose

Experience a lovely, well-maintained portion of the Appalachian Trail, with a 2.6-mile (in total) hike on Anthony's Nose (directions). Parts of this hike may be a little steep, but reach the top and you'll be greeted with a 5-star view of the Hudson River.

Follow the directions to Tulip Springs and then enjoy a moderately difficult hike with deliciously whimsical views. This document will provide you with detailed hike instructions. Of course, you'll get to see the gentle Hemlock Falls, but you'll also be treated to other unique views. Trailside Nature & Science Center

Visit Trailside in Union County and enjoy a self-guided "Walk Back In Time" with a geological exploration. This trail will take you past evidence of a lava flow dated from 210 million years ago, and will bring you past basalt columns that developed from ancient lava. You'll also experience the outlays of ancient glaciers, and evidence of current hillside springs.

Morristown National Historic Park

A spot for history buffs and outdoor adventurers alike, this historic park offers 27 miles of designated hiking trails. There is a short trail connecting the various historic sites at this juncture, as well as a longer one designed to allow you to fully stretch your legs.
