I own two of these sweaters. They are a nice weight for layering and the medium fits me perfectly and is long enough for my height (6'2" 175 lbs). The only thing I would change is the thumb holes in sleeves. I don't really understand the functional aspects of these holes and to me they just detract from the overall fit and finish of the garment.
REPLY FROM KÜHL®: The KUHL Thumb loops are a way of having the sleeve act as a mitten in a pinch to keep your hands warm while your fingers are free to manipulate your iphone etc. In addition, the thumb loops play an important role in layering, to aid keeping the sleeves in place as you pull on and off extra layers, a vital activity in the mountains when getting too hot or too cold can be life threatening.

I have many wool layers, usually Ibex. And based on their quality, fit and great value, I haven't worn anything other than Kuhl pants for years. I finally decided to try a Kuhl top, and I couldn't be more impressed. The fit is classier, the quality of workmanship is better and the price is about 60% of Kuhl's competitors. This is simply the best $100 wool sweater available anywhere. Now please make a lightweight Merino model for when I need something just a bit more than a t-shirt :)

Kuhl Skar Zip-Neck; A washable 100% 18.5 micron merino wool long sleeve jersey with thumb loops and articulated fit. This was the right light weight as a base-layer or solo for me which can perform especially well and versatile in summer thru winter for moisture management and insulating as it is wool and won’t hold-in odor. When the heat (and UV) pours on, a shirt as this provides protective cover as well as moisture management. This is crucial when the heat-index climbs from humidity and bare skin can no longer cool itself which can lead to heat-exhaustion and hyperthermia. Some really think that desert people who stay all covered up from the sun are crazy but I would warn against such hazardous thinking. And we should all know the principle benefits from clothing as this in dealing with the cold or rain. Think of it as ‘system-layering’; Base-Layer (as moisture management), Mid-Layer (as insulation and/or wind barrier which depends on weather and activity) and then the Shelter-Layer (think of it as wearing your tent, safe shelter from the storm). So as a base-layer wool is best at wicking moisture from the skin, handing it off to the next layer and also keeping you warm when wet. In consideration of the above, you can see why the Kuhl Skar Zip-Neck (and those like it) are the right lightweight, base-layer or solo jersey which performs especially well and versatile in summer thru winter. Cheers
REPLY FROM KÜHL®: Thank you for the excellently written description of layering techniques. Yes, desert dwellers know a thing or two is right... Keeping the sun off you is as important to your overall well being as is temperature control. In addition to the hot sun in the desert west, high altitude is a killer for the increase UV exposure. (70% greater than at the beach.) Many KUHL products feature a UPF rating so the customer knows it will provide relief from the sun's exposure in addition to wicking, stretching, or having a soft hand. Thanks for telling us the Skar does so well on many levels. Cheers.

Recently purchased in Sedona AZ @ Hike House. Very nice folks. Love the fit & the weight. The stitching makes this 1/4 zip stand out w/o being to pronounced. One small issue: wore it with a light yellow v-neck "T" & the black dye bled in the arm pit area. Hope it washes out. Love it otherwise & will probably purchase another!
REPLY FROM KÜHL®: Thanks Farrel and let us know about the dye issue if you have to by sending an email to email@example.com. That should not happen and this is the first case so far. Hope your t-shirt recovers. Thanks for the kind words about our dealer HIKE HOUSE in Sedona, AZ.

I have searched many manufacturers to find a lighter 1/4 zip that the collar actually stands up. I have had others where the material is either too flimsy or collar too long and it curls over and looks/feels awkward. Bravo Kuhl, this is the first I've tried that actually works! My only question is ... the fit is perfect now, do I have to be careful how I wash it so it doesn't shrink at all? Hope I can throw it in with my other dark clothes including my Kuhl Riot denim jeans.
REPLY FROM KÜHL®: Almost all KUHL fabrics are pre-shrunk. Still, it's best to follow directions on the label; always helps to wash in cold and be careful in the dryer. Use low heat.
