that refer to various fish species.

Since you are reading this article, you are probably interested in learning some basic tips about fishing. Here, by KÜHL, you will have the opportunity to learn different things about fishing and fishing
tackle from scratch with the following fishing guide. Moreover, we will give you some essential
guidelines and tips that will definitely help you especially if you are a newbie.

This article will analyze critically the most popular and easiest fishing technique for a newbie angler, the
wonderful casting technique.

A few words

As we already mentioned, there are different fishing techniques for various fish species. However,
before we start analyzing the easiest technique ever, it would be a good idea to talk about the fish
species categories. First and foremost, we would like to put them into two categories. The first category involves fish species that feed on microorganisms like plankton, worms and insects.
These fish are usually small and they live in shoals (group of fish) in order to protect themselves. On the
other hand, the second category involves predator fish species that basically feed on other fish.

Emphasis should be laid on the fact that it is essential to mention these categories just to see the
differences between the bait. Additionally, the techniques for freshwater and saltwater fishing diversify
from one another.

Casting

Considering that you’ve understood the differences, we would like to start analyzing the casting
technique. We are here to help you with the most important tips about methods, fishing tackle, rig, bait
and suitable clothing. Casting is a technique that you can use for all waters and locations no matter
where or when.

Generally speaking, you will need only a casting rod mounted on a reel with a line and baited hooks.
That’s all! Let’s begin with the details.

Fishing tackle

The casting rod has a length of 2,5m.-3,5m. If you are a beginner, it would be a good idea to use a
telescopic fishing rod that is not only portable, but also really compact. Furthermore, we recommend
the casting weight of 50g-150g which is the limit weight of our rig.

Keep in mind that the rig will have a sinker of the weight of 80g.-100g. As far as the reel is concerned,
you should use a special casting reel (size 3000-6000) equipped with rear brakes and max drag 6-10lbs.
However, what is a fishing reel without a line? Nothing!

A monofilament line N.050 should be ideal for that purpose. Do not forget to attach a fluorocarbon
leader N.0.30 which is totally transparent in the water. The hooks depend on the fish species you are
after.

Obviously, you have to choose really small swivels to connect the mainline with the leader line.

Rig

The rig construction is the following. On the end of the main line you have to attach a swivel in order to
tie on the 1m fluorocarbon leader line with the sinker. Don’t worry the rig is really simple! Afterwards,
you have to attach on the leader line two 25cm fluorocarbon lines with the hooks.

The recommended distance between the two lines is approximately 35cm.

Bait

The first thing that crosses your mind when you hear the word fishing is a fishing rod with a hooked
worm! The bait is very important and you have to choose it according to the target fish and the water
circumstances of course.

The best baits for saltwater fishing are small shrimps, worms, fish pieces and whole small fish. However,
for freshwater fishing you will need maggots, worms, leeches and fish pieces.

You may know the adage: “Match the hatch”. True to the adage you have to know the feeding habits of
your target fish in order to choose the right bait.

Locations

As a matter of fact, the best casting locations are rocky shorelines, ports, beaches, rigs and waters with
abrupt waters. If you are a freshwater enthusiast it would be a good idea to select deep lakes or
estuaries.

These are some recommendations, but you do not have to exclude locations. It is a versatile fishing
technique that will surely not let you down.

Fishing Hours

Dawn and dusk are typically the best fishing hours. However, some fish are night feeders. That depends
on the target fish.

Target Fish

Saltwater: Gill-head seabreams, black seabreams, white seabreams, common Pandora
Freshwater: carp, pike, trout and catfish

Clothing

Obviously, you can go casting whether during the winter or summer. This technique could take many
hours of fishing so you have to choose warm fishing casting clothing. We love the EUROPA ¼ ZIP SWEATER paired with a SPYFIRE HOODY JACKET.

The thermal body mapping will keep you warm and protected from the water sprays. If you are fishing
during the summer, some summer nights could be not as warm as you imagine. After testing the JETSTREAM JACKET we think that it is the best choice!

It is lightweight and we adore it!

Moreover, we like the TROPIK SS SHIRT for Summer fishing tours that provides extra ‘’freedom’’ as it
is breathable and utilizes a nice cotton and polyester material.

An ÜBERKÜHL CAP should certainly be good as it is the ultimate fishing accessories.

Conclusion

Finally, the analysis of basic fishing techniques is limitless and does not end here! Do not forget that
fishing is a wonderful hobby. However, you should have the appropriate ‘’dress code’’ if you want to
enjoy it.

Suitable clothing will not only make you feel good, but also will protect you from the elements of nature
and harsh weather conditions.
