Warm Weather Hiking Trails: Chicago, IL

When I moved from Utah to Chicago, I thought I'd have to give up on hiking. Growing up near the country's best hiking trails and state parks, I didn't think the city had anything to offer me. I'm happy to say I was wrong. The Chicago area is filled with amazing trails. It's filled with sprawling state parks, history-focused hikes, and great urban day hikes. I may even hike more now than I did in Utah! Since moving to Chicago, I've experienced some amazing sites and places. Here are a few of my picks for the best hiking trails near Chicago.

Northerly Island Is The City's Best Day Hike

Northerly Island is a vibrant oasis in a concrete desert. Extending from the city to Lake Michigan, Northerly is filled with biking and walking trails that are perfect for a day hike, although, with 91-miles to explore, it's also worth finding camping opportunities. When you walk through Northerly Island, it feels like it's always been there. However, the peninsula is actually a man-made creation. Construction started in 1920 and ended in 1925, and today Northerly Island is one of Chicago's most popular sites. Trails feature plenty of flora and fauna for visitors to enjoy. But don't forget that there's a lot to do off the trails. One of my favorite places in Chicago is the Island's Adler Planetarium, featuring breathtaking theaters where visitors can truly experience the cosmos.

Starved Rock State Park Is a National Treasure

No discussion of the best hiking trails near Chicago is complete without Starved Rock. It's filled with trails, canyons, falls, and wildlife, making it one of the best trails in America. The waterfalls of Starved Rock are some of the most worthwhile experiences of the park. If you go during the spring, you'll have the awesome experience of watching them flow full force. And animal-lovers will certainly see abundant wildlife on their visit. Beyond that, this is a park filled with historical sites, accommodations, canyons, breweries, and more. I visit Starved Rock pretty often, and every time I manage to see something new. So make sure you don't pass this one up.

Channahon State Park Is Amazing For History Buffs!

Channahon literally means "the meeting of the waters." If you like US history, that matters. The water running through Channahon connects Illinois to Lake Michigan. This park allows visitors to experience the past like never before. When you visit the old Locksmith's house, you feel transported to a different time. No longer do you think of a time where you can buy hiking clothes for men or women and seek out nature. Instead, you feel part of a world where nature surrounds you and human beings coexist and thrive in the non-human world. Beyond history, Channahon offers great opportunities for canoeing, biking, and hiking. It's not a gigantic park, which makes it a great opportunity to enjoy a day hike.

Become One With The Morton Arboretum's Trees

The purpose of hiking trails near Chicago and other cities is allowing us to leave overcrowded space and get lost in nature. The trees of the Morton Arboretum manage this in a pretty incredible way. The Morton Arboretum features a massive collection of trees and plants. The park's many shapes and shades of green make it a great place to experience something city-dwellers rarely do. You can also support a good cause. The Arboretum is a massive supporter of conservation initiatives within the state of Illinois. As hikers, we depend on actions like this, making it something incredible to see.
