Built to Last: Rebuilding Spyfire

When it came time to reimagine SPYFIRE®, we went back to the mountains, where KÜHL began. The mountains inform everything we do. The elements shape how we design, how we build, and what we believe as a brand.

SPYFIRE® has been around for more than a decade. It’s the piece people tell us they’ve worn through a dozen winters: on trailheads, on airport layovers, on cold walks home. That kind of loyalty is earned, and we took it to heart. We listened to what you told us: what you’d never change, what you wished worked better, and where your SPYFIRE® showed its years. Everyone who has worn SPYFIRE® has been part of the same pursuit we have: to make the best.

Improved body-mapped baffles

The biggest change is one you’ll feel before you see it.

Earlier versions of SPYFIRE® distributed warmth fairly evenly. It worked, but the core holds heat differently than the extremities, so we designed for it. The core needs to hold heat. Shoulders and arms need to move. Some areas run warm the moment you start moving.

For the redesign, we used updated body mapping to decide where the warmth should go. Larger baffles sit across the core, where heat matters most. Smaller baffles sit where flexibility and comfort matter more. Earlier versions could bunch at the arms when you reached or lifted, so the new layout lets Spyfire move with you instead of against you.

Synthetic insulation now sits at the underarms on the men's styles; an area that builds heat quickly and where down does its least useful work. The synthetic panels let that heat escape while still insulating, so you stay warm without overheating.

The result is warmth that feels balanced and streamlined, not bulky.

Stitch-free construction

Traditional down jackets are built by stitching through the shell to form baffles. Every stitch is a needle hole, and every needle hole is a small weakness where cold can creep in and down slowly works its way out. It’s also where fabric wears first.

The new SPYFIRE® uses stitch-free, pre-woven baffle construction. The baffles are built into the fabric itself, so there are no needle holes running through the fabric. That means fewer cold spots, better down retention, and a jacket that holds up longer.

It’s the kind of improvement you’ll notice years from now, when your SPYFIRE® is still holding its warmth.

A quieter surface

The exterior has a new matte finish. It’s clean and understated, at home on a ridgeline or a city street.

We not only chose it for how it looks new but for how it ages. Glossy finishes tend to show every scuff. A matte surface wears in rather than wearing out, the way good gear should.

Muscovy down

SPYFIRE® is now insulated with 800-fill-power Muscovy down. Muscovy down has higher thermal performance than traditional down that traps more air per ounce. That means more warmth for the weight, so SPYFIRE® stays light and packs down small without giving up heat. It also springs back from being crushed much faster than traditional down and keeps its loft wash after wash.

Details refined

Small details decide whether a jacket becomes the one you reach for every day, so we spent a lot of time on them.

The hood was one of the things you asked us about most. Earlier versions could catch the wind, so we reworked it on both men’s and women’s styles. It now has a smaller opening and a cleaner profile that sits closer to the face, so it seals out wind instead of catching it.

For women, the longer parka keeps the silhouette people know and love, while the jacket was cut slightly straighter for a more modern, versatile fit. Softer fabric at the neck, finished cuffs, and additional pockets make everyday moments more comfortable.

For men, improved articulation lets the hoody, and vest move naturally with you. Cleaner cuffs and streamlined adjustments keep everything controlled without adding clutter.

The full line is built for versatility. For women, it includes a parka, a jacket, a hoody, and a vest. For men, it includes, a hoody, a jacket and a vest.

We kept the clean silhouette, the warmth, and the everyday versatility that made SPYFIRE® worth keeping. We removed the needle holes, the hot and cold spots, and the extra bulk. What remains is the Spyfire people love, built to last longer than the one before it.

Born in the mountains®. Worn everywhere.
